Virtual TED Talk Gathering

Graphic for TED Talks Ideas Worth Spreading

We've all seen TED Talks, but unless we've seen them live we've only experienced them in a singular manner with little opportunity to explore the idea or issue further after the applause ends.

As a community bookstore, The Book Bungalow wants to provide for community dialogue and mutual understanding. We do a lot of this through our book clubs and author events, and while many of the TED Talks center on ideas presented in recent books, there are plenty that go beyond the written, published page. We don't want to ignore such ideas and issues, but rather engage with them in follow-up conversation that helps to bridge understanding and build trust - not only in the idea or the speaker, but between the audience members.

So, every third Thursday evening of the month at 7 pm, we're going to host a Virtual TED Talk Gathering. We'll begin by sharing our screen and playing 1-2 TED Talks and then pose and field questions afterward that are designed to spark conversation and dialogue, so that all in attendance might better understand how each feels about the issue or idea presented. We hope to make this a bridge-building experience, one that encourages civil rather than discordant conversation and a stronger feeling of community. And once our gatherings get large enough and participants feel safe enough with each other, we'll try to move this to an in-person monthly event at our store (but still keeping the virtual option).

If there is a particular topic or idea or issue you would like to see addressed in a future TED Talk Gathering, please call the store and ask to speak with the manager so we can add it to our schedule.
