While Miss Tonya is on a summer hiatus, the owner and manager of The Book Bungalow, Tanya Mills, will assume her story reading duties. And she loves to use different voices and accents while she reads aloud! We'll post details on this week's books shortly.

In June, Miss Tanya will be reading for Story Time twice. On the 15th, she'll read Ursula Upside Down written and illustrated by Corey R. Tabor (for kids aged 4-8) and The Dream Catcher, written and illustrated by Marcelo Verdad (for kids aged 4-7). Then two weeks later on the 29th, she'll read Caldecott Honor Recipient David Ezra Stein's Because Amelia Smiled (for kids aged 3-7) and Pete the Cat Screams for Ice Cream!, written and illustrated by Kimberly & James Dean (for kids aged 4-8).

Cover of Corey R. Tabor's "Ursula Upside Down"

Ursula finds confidence in seeing the world her own way in another innovative, flipped-format picture book from Caldecott Honoree and Geisel Award winner Corey R. Tabor.

Ursula is a happy catfish, swimming through a shimmering river with weeds waving above and a sky full of scrumptious bugs below.

Then one question turns her world upside down.

Is left right? Is right wrong? Which way even is up?

Children will love turning the book upside down and back again as they follow Ursula's humorous journey to self-discovery.

Review Quote:

"Caldecott Honoree Tabor has once again found a subject that aligns well with his love of flipped formats. Pink, plump, and whimsically whiskered, Ursula lives in a "wonderful world"--signature-style illustrations depict a blissful underwater environment in sun-streaked, translucent aquatic tones. Offering a funny reminder that perspective need not be isolating." -- Publishers Weekly

Cover of Marcelo Verdad's "The Dream Catcher" (English version)

For fans of Last Stop on Market Street, an uplifting story about a boy who stays true to his biggest dream while finding the magic in every moment.

Some people dream of perfect waves, fancy castles, or piloting a plane. Others dream of someone to laugh and play with all day long. Some just dream of having a meal for the next day.

And little Miguel? As he and Abuelito work in the hot Oaxacan sun, selling cold coconuts and macrame dream catchers to earn a few coins, Miguel has only one simple wish--to have his parents by his side. But how can he keep the faith when the truth is that dreams don't always come to pass?

Marcelo Verdad's poignant tale of hope and resilience shows how living in the here and now can be a journey every bit as beautiful as a dream.

Review Quotes:

"It's a touching work with a childlike feel that considers how 'everything happens at the right time.'"-- Publishers Weekly

"The simple yet engaging narrative is perfect for young readers, with illustrations that add warmth and depth to the story. This heartening read will inspire children to chase their dreams while cherishing the moments spent with loved ones."-- Booklist

Cover of David Ezra Stein's "Because Amelia Smiled"

Because Amelia smiles as she skips down the street, her neighbor Mrs. Higgins smiles too, and decides to send a care package of cookies to her grandson Lionel in Mexico. The cookies give Lionel an idea, and his idea inspires a student, who in turn inspires a ballet troupe in England! And so the good feelings that started with Amelia's smile make their way around the world. Putting a unique spin on "what goes around comes around" Caldecott Honoree David Ezra Stein's charmingly illustrated story reminds us that adding even a small dose of kindness into the world is sure to spur only more kindness--which could eventually make its way back to you!

Review Quotes:

"A playfully profound picture book that does its part in passing on good feelings." --Kirkus Reviews

"Realistic, heavily colored, and intensely detailed, the illustrations invite children to look closely and see the way people across the globe are connected: the smiles, the pets, the music. Certainly there's a lot to discuss here, and some adults may want kids to make connections with their own actions, but this is also just a lovely way to look at life."

Cover of Kimberly & James Dean's "Pete the Cat Screams for Ice Cream!"

I scream! You scream! Pete screams for ice cream!

The Just Chillin' ice cream truck is coming today and Pete the Cat can't wait. He runs as fast as he can to find the truck. It's getting late, but his friends need his help. Will Pete take a little time out of his day to help his friends? Follow Pete the Cat as he learns that it's always cool to be kind.

From the authors of the #1 New York Times bestselling Pete the Cat series, James and Kimberly Dean, this picture book is reminiscent of Pete favorites like Magic Sunglasses and perfect for fans of Grumpy Monkey by Suzanne Lang.
